Soul-Comforting Mulled Wine

Julia Canella | Recipes | 13 June 2024

Spicy, sweet and delightfully cosy – wrap your hands around this marvellous winter warmer.

It's the season for cosying up on the couch with your favourite throw and a warm sip of happiness.

Mulled Wine | Serves 2-4

Ingredients

  • 750ml dry red wine
  • 1 orange, peeled and sliced
  • 1 Granny Smith apple, sliced
  • 8 whole cloves
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 3 star anise, plus more for garnish
  • 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup or honey
  • 1 orange, sliced for garnish

In a medium-sized saucepan, bring together all ingredients.

To ensure your wine's alcohol content retains, bring this mixture to a gentle simmer over low-medium heat.

As soon as it simmers, reduce the heat to low.

Cover your saucepan, and simmer for at least 30 minutes, or up to 3 hours.

Discard all ingredients, and either strain your mulled wine into a jug for serving, or keep it in your saucepan to ladle directly into your favourite heatproof mugs.

Serve warm, and top with garnishes of orange slices and star anise.

Tip: if you're feeling a little extra, add ¼ cup of your favourite liqueur to the mix, such as Cointreau.
