Overwhelmed by the selection of bath towels out there and how to compare great from average?

Understanding what makes a towel great is a breeze when you understand its simple anatomy.

The below points will have you sorting through the piles like an expert, and you'll have the best bath towel in no time.

It's all in the quality

Two sure signs you have a high-quality bath towel that won't lint are one, if the pile (fibre) stands up and appears tightly packed, and two, it offers a velvety feel with some weight.

If the pile is so loose you can see its backing (while also appearing flat and abrasive), let go of the towel immediately. You've just encountered a run-of-the-mill sort that won't last the distance.

Weight

GSM = grams per square metre is a strong indicator of towel quality.

Generally, the more grams per square metre, the more long-lasting and absorbent your towel.

There is a but here, and not in terms of quality – the heavier your towel is, the less desirable it'll be to transport to the beach or gym. Oh and parents? It's likely you'll be dragging more than one around with a few kids in tow (a disaster when said towels are wet).

So it's best to consider that a specific weight may not be the most convenient for you.

Try to remember this when contemplating your preferred towel weight:

200-300 GSM towels are useful as a kitchen or gym towel (lightweight).

400-600 GSM towels are superior in quality and suitable for virtually everything: bathroom, beach, fitness, travel and wherever children are involved (small bodies = lightweight towels).

600-1800 GSM towels are usually reserved for bath mats and just pure luxury. There's no denying that this weight is utterly superb for home use (not so ideal for everyday trips to your daily workout location).

Style and colour

Gone are the days when towels only appeared in limited primary colours or just plain whites.

Towels today are bursting with colour and pattern, so personalising your theme is just as thrilling as a home renovation (and far less expensive).

Consider an aesthetic that will complement your space, and think about using a theme throughout more than one room – it looks super-chic.

Pool and beach towels call for all sorts of fun and should always have a side with terry-towelling for drying and velour on the opposite.

Why velour? It retains colour and pattern and adds comfort to a picnic or lie-down, so look for these double-sided benefits when selecting any outdoor towel.

Bath towel size

Down to personal preference, defining what bath towel size fits the bill will make your towel hunt far easier.

Hand, face and bath towels are sized for their obvious uses, but what's all this noise between bath sheets and bath towels?

Quite simply, bath sheets are just larger but the difference in size can affect the way you use each.

As a guide for bath sheets vs bath towels:

Bath sheets will appeal to you if you're after a no-nonsense, all-over wrap with little to no maneuvering after your shower.

Bath towels, being smaller, are easier to maneuver if you prefer to pat yourself dry and enjoy a little extra pamper time. This size gets an extra tick for easier laundering and smaller-space storage.

By following these easy points, you'll be drying yourself with the crème de la crème of bath towels – every time.
